Here you will find information about Activities offered by your Librarians and in the Makerspace.
*Project LIT Book Club 5/6 (GREEN Tuesdays, G Period) w/Mx. LaMontagne
In Project LIT book club, we will read and discuss books that feature diverse characters and reflect the realities of our world today. You’ll find characters who fight against racism, poverty, prejudice, and hate. You’ll also find characters who embrace their identities, overcome challenges, solve mysteries, and discover true friendships. Together, we will choose and discuss the books YOU want to read.
*Sewing (GREEN Tuesdays, G Period AND GOLD Tuesdays, F Period) w/Mrs. Coleman, Mx. LaMontagne, and Ms. Clements
Come and learn the basics of hand and machine sewing, and practice your skills on your own creations! Previous students have made pillows, messenger bags, zippered pouches, stuffed creatures, small quilts and more! This activity will be offered in the Fall and Spring for 5th and 6th Graders.
*Zine-making (GREEN Wednesdays, E Period) w/Ms. Clements and Mrs. Coleman
Are you interested in creative writing, art, and sharing your ideas and passions with others? Would you like to create your own handmade, low tech publication? Let’s explore the world of “zines” (small magazines) and let your creativity flow! A zine can be whatever you want – all words, all pictures, regular size, tiny, colorful, black-and-white – it’s up to you. You can write about individual things like your hobbies or favorite movies or you can write about big issues, like social justice. Once you’ve got your idea and you’ve created one copy of your zine, it’s time to get published. We’ll explore layout and printing options and make small editions of your zines to add to the library collection and share with others (100% optional). To find out more about zines and to see what we created last year, please visit: https://sites.google.com/collegiate-va.org/zines/
*Book Club 7/8 (GOLD Tuesdays, G Period) w/Mrs. White
Books! Can’t get enough? Would you love to talk about the one you just finished? Even if you hated it? Or loved it so much you could not fall asleep before you read the last page? Would it help to chat with friends about who the best character is? Join our book club and we will read together, discuss our favorite plots and characters, share titles and think of other fun ways to celebrate books!
There will be another session of Book Club offered in the spring.
*3D Design and Printing 101 (GOLD Fridays, E Period) w/Ms. Clements
Are you new to 3D design and printing? In this Fall activity, we will take a deep dive into 3D design by working with Tinkercad to create objects from our imaginations that can also exist in the real world. We will work together on design challenges and explore our own creative ideas. Our designs will go from digital code to physical objects via cardboard construction and 3D printing. This activity is for folks who have not done any 3D printing in the middle school. We will offer 3D Design and Printing 102 in the spring for those who have already done some 3D design and printing.
